2022 Best Korean Anti Aging Serums for Dry Skin blog post by Facing Fertility
Nowadays, shopping for a face sunscreen that is gentle, natural, and actually works can be frustrating and time-consuming. Our panel of experts have done the work for you.

If you have unquenchable dry skin like me, you might already know that winter can be the worst season for our skin.

Do you ever get dry patches, accentuated fine lines after applying makeup, or those tinges of tightness and itchiness?

Keeping dry skin moisturized isn’t about how many different products we layer on but the quality of each product.

By using higher quality products, we can cut down the steps in our daily skin care routine and save so much time.

To find out which products really help smooth wrinkles and get rid of dryness, we compared all of the high-end Korean anti-aging serums available in the USA and narrowed it down to our top 3 based on:

  • Ingredients list (no potentially harmful chemicals against pregnant or nursing women),
  • Performance (worked to visibly improve our skin),
  • Novelty (selecting products that are newly developed

Why Is Korean Skin Care Best?

My skincare obsession all started by watching Korean television shows and movies, also known as Korean dramas or K-drama.

I’m always amazed by how beautiful and ageless Korean actresses and actors look on and off screen.

Sticking to a daily skin care routine using the absolute best Korean skin care products is part of the job. But this can get especially challenging during the winter.

Did you know during winter in South Korea, the average temperature is a few degrees below freezing?

The harsh, snowy winds easily sweep away moisture from skin.

And when our skin gets to a critical point of dryness, that is when wrinkles start to form.

South Korea’s climate and consumers demand ultra-moisturizing skin care that provides anti-wrinkle and skin barrier strengthening ingredients.

Moreover, South Korea’s skin care researchers and developers are leading the way in advanced skin care.

And we are enjoying all the benefits of new discoveries in the form of effective, beautifully packaged products.

For this product comparison article, we used a skin moisture meter to see how well each Korean anti-aging serum hydrated our skin and kept it hydrated during a whole day.

(above image shows from left to right: the Forte Serum, the Youth Revolution Vitamin C Radiance Concentrator, and the Concentrated Ginseng Renewing Serum.)

Hydrating our skin is only half of the solution to getting rid of dry skin for good.

The other half is to strengthen our skin so that it is able to retain hydration with nourishing ingredients.

Introducing hanbang Korean skin care, another reason why Korean skincare products are best!

What Is Hanbang Korean Skin Care?

Hanbang refers to holistic Traditional Korean Medicine (TKM), which has been used for centuries and is still practiced today with modern medicine.

Many of the hanbang herbs used in medicine are also very effective at tackling signs of premature skin aging when used topically in skincare products.

In fact, most of the high-end, luxury Korean skincare brands use hanbang ingredients because of their effectiveness against signs of aging.

Western anti-wrinkle skin care takes an approach of stressing the skin with chemical peels and retinols.

However, Eastern skin care looks to nourish with natural ingredients and boost your skin’s natural regenerative abilities.

This year’s top 3 Korean anti aging serums for dry skin feature these rejuvenating, research-proven hanbang ingredients:

Korean Ginseng: Also known as panax ginseng, Korean ginseng extract helped lighten dark spots and brighten uneven skin tone. Ginsenosides are the unique antioxidants from ginseng. The most powerful form of ginseng is red ginseng, which was reserved as a remedy only for royals. Studies show it provides anti-cancer as well as anti-wrinkle and brightening skin benefits. Red ginseng is fresh ginseng that has been dried and steamed to increase ginsenoside concentrations. Truly high-quality Korean skincare products provide “red ginseng extract” in their ingredients.

Peony Flower: Peonies aren’t just pretty to look at; their unique antioxidants paeoniflorin help revitalize our health from the inside out. You can find natural supplements made with peony flower root that help boost immunity. As a topical skincare ingredient, peony extracts help lighten dark spots for a more even-toned and radiant complexion. Moreover, white peony root extract (paeonia albiflora) also provides anti-wrinkle with brightening benefits to help smooth and firm aging skin.

Satsuma Tangerine: Sweet, tangy, and flavorful, satsuma tangerines provide more than just vitamin C. These little citrus fruits are harvested towards the winter and they pack unique antioxidants called flavonoids. While vitamin C as a skincare ingredient is renown for its brightening and collagen boosting qualities, satsuma extract also provides those benefits without any potential skin irritation. While not all forms of vitamin C are stable and not all formulas containing vitamin C are suitable for sensitive skin, satsuma tangerine extract demonstrated moisturizing and anti-inflammatory benefits.

These ingredients have been used for centuries in medicine to boost our health and now they are infused into some of the best skincare products available to keep our skin radiant and youthful.

The Rejuvenating Multi-tasking Serum for Dry, Aging Skin

We wanted to put our #1 serum for aging skin up against the latest and greatest Korean serums to see how it would compare.

According to the skin moisture tests, the Forte Serum by Cell Forte Skincare was the most hydrating Korean face serum out of the top 3 serums!

Here is a photo of my skin after cleansing and not applying products at 10.4% water/hydration level.

Here is the result after applying a generous layer of the Forte Serum at 63.4% water/hydration!

In comparison to the Youth Revolution Vitamin C Radiance Concentrator and the Concentrated Ginseng Renewing Serum, the Forte Serum was more hydrating upon application and after 8 hours.

After a whole day, my skin was still hydrated with no dry patches at 59.1% water/hydration levels.

Pros:
+ Immediately hydrates very dry skin

+ Keeps skin hydrated throughout the day

+ Does not cause any irritation or redness

+ Nanoliposomal technology keep the active ingredients fresh

+ Hanbang extracts, peptides, and EGF fight wrinkles and dark spots

Cons:
- Limited stock, sometimes sold out

Dry skin, especially mature dry skin (like mine), needs both deep hydration and skin strengthening ingredients and the Forte Serum delivers a buffet of both.

This ultra-hydrating serum not only kept our skin hydrated but it also helped brighten skin tone over all and smooth fine lines around the eyes.

For hydration, instead of exfoliating acids or retinols, the Forte Serum is made with a base of moisturizing and skin smoothing sericin, a protein found in silk.

According to a research study, sericin was proven to be a very effective hydrating ingredient, which also helps the skin hold onto hydration.

As a result of deeply moisturizing the skin, sericin was able to help improve smoothness too.

The Forte Serum is also formulated with sodium hyaluronate, a smaller and more effective form of hyaluronic acid to help plump fine lines and restore a healthy skin barrier.

For skin strengthening ingredients, the Forte Serum provides over 22 revitalizing hanbang herbal extract, EGF (epidermal growth factor), and 9 collagen boosting peptides.

EGF and these select peptides help smooth, brighten, firm, and lift aging skin by signaling your body to make more collagen and healthy new skin cells naturally.

Plus, the Forte Serum provides 22 hanbang extracts including peony extract featured in the Youth Revolution Vitamin C Radiance Concentrator and ginseng extract featured in the Concentrated Ginseng Renewing Serum.

On your first use of the Forte Serum, you will notice how your skin drinks it up!

Extra dry areas such as around the eyes tend to absorb the serum much faster.

After the second layer, our skin had a natural radiance from hydration and fine lines looked much smoother.

Here is a photo of my skin after having tried the Forte Serum for 2 weeks, after cleansing and without any products on at 17.3% water/hydration levels instead of the previous 10.4%.

Even without any products on, my skin is naturally less dry and more hydrated.

The best part is that the Forte Serum is the most affordable out of the top 3 best Korean anti-aging serums.

At full price, the Forte Serum is $180 for 1.69 fl oz but for a limited time as Cell Forte Skin Care is hosting a New Customer Special where you can save on shipping.

The Advanced Vitamin C Serum for Dry, Sensitive Skin

While vitamin C serums have gained popularity lately for their brightening and smoothing qualities, not all vitamin C serums are created equally.

Vitamin C in skincare often works like an exfoliating acid, and too much can cause redness, irritation, and dryness.

However, the Youth Revolution Vitamin C Radiance Concentrator by Amorepacific has a balance of vitamin C, brightening peony extract, and hydrating ingredients.

After almost a full dropper was spread all over the face and allowed to absorb, my skin hydration levels were boosted to 61%!

When the day was over and it was time for my nighttime skin care routine, my hydration levels were still good but down to 54%.

Pros:

+ Hydrating and moisturizing for dry skin

+ Does not cause any irritation or redness

+ Stable and effective form of vitamin C is used

+ Hanbang extracts and vitamin C fight help brighten and smooth

Cons:

- May cause sun sensitivity due to vitamin C content

- Using too much can cause an oily feeling on the skin

After testing out this serum, we did not experience any redness or irritation.

If you have very dry, sensitive skin and you want to try out a vitamin C based skin care product to help brighten dullness without irritation, this may be the serum for you!

Another common issue with vitamin c skincare products is that they lose their effectiveness after opening and using the product a couple times.

This is because vitamin C is an active ingredient that is hard to keep fresh and stable.

Amorepacific addresses this issue of keeping the Youth Revolution Vitamin C Radiance Concentrator effective until the last drop by creating two formulas in one bottle.

One formula is a hydrating base of green tea leaf water with skin barrier strengthening vitamin B and niacinamide.

The second formula provides vitamin C in the form of 3-O-Ethyl Ascorbic Acid with brightening peony extract and anti-wrinkle ingredient adenosine.

3-O-Ethyl Ascorbic Acid is a rather stable form of vitamin C that not only helps fade dark spots but also boosts collagen production for firmer, smoother skin.

Shaking the bottle before use helps mix and activate the two formulas (see the two different formulas in the ingredients lists shown above).

According to the skin moisture meter, the Youth Revolution Vitamin C Radiance Concentrator did boost hydration but not as much as the Forte Serum did.

Also, while you can apply many layers of the Forte Serum for maximum hydration, applying too much of the Amorepacific serum can cause a bit of a greasy feeling.

The lightweight, watery texture is easy to spread but takes about a minute or two to absorb.

While results were not immediately visible, after using the Youth Revolution Vitamin C Radiance Concentrator for 2 weeks, our skin looked more even toned and naturally radiant.

At $250 for a one ounce bottle, this serum is a splurge!

But if you are a Sephora VIB Rouge member, you can save 20% off this serum and your cart until November 15th.

The Moisturizing Korean Royal Treatment for Dry Skin

From avocado eye creams by Glow Recipe Skin Care to kale cleansers by Youth To The People Skin Care, you might have noticed how superfood trends make their way into skin care.

Our skin is our largest organ after all, and the nutrients and antioxidants from these whole food extracts have benefits being used topically too.

Ginseng is no different and it is renowned as one of Asia’s most popular and highly prized “panacea” or medicine for many different benefits.

After massaging in the Sulwhasoo serum, my skin was at 57.7% water/hydration levels.

However, hydration did not last much like the Forte Serum. And after a whole day, my hydration levels were down to 37.9%.

Pros:

+ Lotion texture is very moisturizing for dry skin

+ Does not cause any irritation or redness

+ Hanbang extracts and 4 forms of ginseng help fight signs of aging

Cons:

‍- Does not provide enough water-based hydration

- Strong fragrance

As a skin care ingredient, ginseng helps fight signs of aging caused by sun exposure with unique antioxidants called “ginsenosides”.

Different types of ginsenosides are found in various parts of the plant such as the root, flower, seeds, and berries.

The Concentrated Ginseng Renewing Serum by Sulwhasoo brings you four forms of ginseng for a nourishing and holistic anti-aging experience:

  • Hydrolyzed Ginseng Saponins,
  • Ginseng Seed Oil,
  • Ginseng Flower Extract, and
  • Ginseng Root Extract

To read our recent article about ginseng and its 3 research proven beautifying benefits, click here.

From the copper toned, luxurious packaging to the royal hanbang ingredients, this moisturizing serum will make you feel like a Korean queen!

However, if you are very sensitive to fragrance, please keep in mind that this serum was the most fragrant of all 3 serums.

In skin care product ingredients lists, the ingredients are listed in order of highest to lowest concentration.

On the ingredients list, “Fragrance / Parfum” was rather high up on the list, whereas for the Forte Serum, this is the last ingredient.

Unlike the other two aforementioned serums, the Concentrated Ginseng Renewing Serum has a lotion-like consistency.

If your skin has particularly low oil-moisture levels, this type of oil-based moisturizing serum may be ideal.

We recommend using an oil-free hydrating toner and/or essence to replenish water-based hydration before applying the rich Concentrated Ginseng Renewing Serum.

This ginseng serum by Korean luxury skincare brand Sulwhasoo is also available at Sephora.

If you are a Sephora VIB Rouge member, you can save 20% off the $205 Concentrated Ginseng Renewing Serum and your cart until November 15th.
