Unsponsored Review of The Squalane + Zinc Sheer Mineral Sunscreen by Biossance
Nowadays, shopping for a face sunscreen that is gentle, natural, and actually works can be frustrating and time-consuming. Our panel of experts have done the work for you.

The preventative and immediate benefits of using sunscreen for an extra layer of moisture plus sun protection go on and on.

However, to be consistent it is very important that we enjoy using the product and look forward to using it in our daily skin care routine.

Finally, the face sunscreen that checks all the boxes:

  • Broadspectrum SPF 30
  • No white cast or chalkiness
  • Provides anti-aging skin care ingredients
  • Wears beautifully with or without makeup
  • Not greasy and doesn’t leave your skin oily

Too good to be true? We’ve tested this sunscreen against two other top competitors and saw phenomenal results on all skin types with the Squalane + Zinc Sheer Mineral Sunscreen.

What Are The Benefits of Squalane in Skin Care?

Squalane is a moisturizing type of oil and it has a fatty acid profile very similar to that of sebum, the natural oil our skin makes.

By nourishing our skin with the right oil-based moisturizing ingredients such as squalane, this can help our skin produce less oil due to dryness.

And less oil helps reduce the changes of acne and breakouts forming.

Squalane also helps soothe dryness and smooth fine lines and wrinkles.

While some malicious corporations source their squalane from hunting sharks, Biossance uses vegan sourced squalane made from sweet sugarcane.

Sugarcane is also a much more eco-friendly resource in that it is renewable and sustainably grown.

Why Choose Mineral Sunscreens During Pregnancy?

If a sunscreen ingredient is not recommended for children, is it completely safe for adults?

We prefer to stay on the safe side and avoid such controversial sunscreen ingredients. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends parents avoid using sunscreens with oxybenzone on their children, as stated in their guidelines (1).

“People may prefer to avoid sunscreens containing oxybenzone, as these may have weak estrogenic effects when absorbed through the skin.”

Speaking of estrogen, pregnant and nursing mothers are strongly advised to avoid products with oxybenzone because this chemical was detected in breast milk (2).

The second common sunscreen ingredient we recommend avoiding altogether is avobenzone.

Recent clinical trials have shown how avobenzone is absorbed into the bloodstream like oxybenzone. Although some may argue that this does not mean the chemical is harmful, there are no studies ensuring its safety either.

That’s why we recommend sticking to mineral based sunscreens that offer broad spectrum protection against both UVA and UVB rays with a minimum of SPF 30.

Our Honest Review of The Squalane + Zinc Sheer Mineral Sunscreen

Instead of reviewing this product on its own, we wanted to compare it against its most formidable competitors.

The Mineral Sheerscreen by SUPERGOOP! and the Silken Pore Perfecting Sunscreen by Tatcha.

While all three sunscreens came in different sizes, the Squalane + Zinc Sheer Mineral Sunscreen was the cheapest at $17.65/oz. The Tatcha sunscreen was much more expensive at $32.50/oz.

After comparing these products, we noticed that the Squalane + Zinc Sheer Mineral Sunscreen was the most hydrating throughout the day, easy to apply, and melted into the skin leaving no white cast or greasiness.

If you wear it without makeup it adds a healthy glow; and underneath makeup it adds a radiance to your foundation as a base.

While we all have different skin tones and types ranging from sensitive to oily and dry, the Squalane + Zinc Sheer Mineral Sunscreen worked for all of us.

The best part about this sunscreen is how easy it is to apply. It feels like a lightweight lotion, no chalkiness or oiliness.

If you do have oily skin, apply less moisturizer before applying this sunscreen.

We wish they made this in a giant pump for the body but that would probably be a bit pricey.

However, Biossance and Sephora do offer a value jumbo size version of the sunscreen at $12.42/oz instead of $17.65/oz for the regular sized bottle.

The Sunscreen We Love to Use

"Finally, a sunscreen that applies smoothly without a trace like a lotion!
The Squalane + Zinc Sheer Mineral Sunscreen is a delight to use.
The formula really goes the extra mile with their signature plant-based squalane and anti-aging white water lily extract."

Almost all of Biossance features a dose of hydrating squalane.
Squalane, unlike most other natural oils, has a fatty acid profile that is very similar to sebum, our skin’s natural oil.
This miracle moisturizing ingredient helps balance both very dry and oily skin types.

Pros:
+ 100% non-nano broad spectrum zinc based sunscreen
+ Moisturizing squalane formula leaves all skin types balanced
+ Ultra-lightweight, smooth texture melts into the skin easily and quickly
+ No white cast or chalkiness, wears beautifully under full makeup all day
Cons:
- A few customers on their website noted personal allergic reactions;
*always patch test and with consult with your dermatologist or primary care provider

Biossance started in 2016 and they have made a few ground-breaking products within this past year. From their hydrating hand sanitizer that was released last year during the pandemic, to their ultra-lightweight sunscreen this summer, Biossance delivers just what we need.

Squalane helps ward off wrinkles and keep oil under control by creating a barrier that retains hydration.

The Squalane + Zinc Sheer Mineral Sunscreen is not only safe and effective as a natural sunscreen, but also a great extra step in keeping your skin moisturized in this drying, hot summer.

Whether you live in a humid climate like Florida or a dry climate like Arizona, when it’s hot our skin is losing hydration levels. Sun exposure is especially drying and without any sunscreen on, it can speed up skin aging in a matter of minutes.

Keep in mind that oily skin is actually dehydrated on the inside, thus the skin produces extra oil to try keep the skin moisturized.

By keeping your skin hydrated with quality products and practicing your skincare routine twice a day, your skin will start to produce less oil naturally.

Our experts with various skin types, from dry and sensitive to oily and acne-prone tested the Biossance Squalane + Zinc Sheer Mineral Sunscreen for a few weeks and found that it caused no irritation, oiliness, or breakouts.

It was the highest rated sunscreen for how it kept the skin balanced, did not leave any white cast, easily blended into the skin, wore beautifully under makeup, and did not cause oiliness at the end of the day.

The High-Tech Sunscreen

Supergoop! is a brand almost purely dedicated to the art of sunscreen. All of their products offer high quality broad spectrum SPF. Their products are available in a wide range from makeup with SPF to sunscreen for kids.

However, not all of their products use a non-nano zinc base for their formulas. The Mineral Sheerscreen is one of their only products that meet our standards for a safe and effective sunscreen for pregnant and nursing mothers as it checks all of our boxes.

Pros:
+ 100% non-nano broad spectrum zinc based sunscreen
+ Moisturizing squalane and hydrating sodium hyaluronate for dry skin
+ Sheer, smooth texture blends into skin without visible white cast
Cons:
- May cause oiliness in oily and acne-prone skin types

According to their website, the Mineral Sheerscreen is:

“developed with breakthrough SheerMatrix Technology, the super sheer formula suspends the sunscreen actives in a matrix without compromising efficacy, so it instantly blends to a natural, smooth finish that wears well alone or as a primer under makeup.”

While we cannot test how well this product protects against blue light, our experts tested the product’s texture and performance with and without makeup.

Our experts with various skin types, from dry and sensitive to oily and acne-prone tested the Supergoop! Mineral Sheerscreen for a few weeks and found that it caused a bit of oiliness for those of us with normal to oily skin types.

Fortunately, there was no irritation or breakouts. Unfortunately, we can’t say this is the best for all day makeup wearers and people with very oily skin types.

Final thoughts on the Supergoop! Sunscreen

The texture was very light but it did take a bit of work to get the product blended to leave no white cast.

When using this product or other sunscreens, a moistened makeup sponge is one of the easiest (and hygienic) ways to apply sunscreen. Be sure not to skimp on the sunscreen as the moisture in the sponge can cause slight dilution.

The Mineral Sheerscreen lives a bit short of our performance expectations despite having a safe and effective formula as a sunscreen.

If you have dry skin, definitely consider this sunscreen as it is a bit richer than the Biossance Squalane + Zinc Sheer Mineral Sunscreen.

The Sunscreen For Smooth Skin

Tatcha was founded by Taiwanese-American Victoria Tsai based on her findings of ancient Japanese geisha beauty rituals. Although modern sunscreen may not have been used by geishas, she incorporates natural ingredients such as Japanese wild rose and sericin, silk protein extract, which were used in geisha beauty culture.

Pros:
+ Helps smooth the look of pores and skin texture
+ 2-in-1 sunscreen + primer, no need for a separate primer
+ No white cast or chalkiness, wears beautifully under full makeup all day

Cons:
- May cause oiliness in oily and acne-prone skin types
- Thick texture is a bit difficult to spread and blend

The Silken Pore Perfecting Sunscreen is made with a silicone base as most makeup primers. Silicones create a waterproof barrier that helps fill in and smooth the look of large pores.

For people with oily, acne-prone skin types, products with dimethicone can either be a dream or a nightmare.

If the overall formula is balanced for your skin type, the product should not cause any breakouts and extra oiliness.

However, certain silicone based products can cause clogged pores in oily skin types. Although the Silken Pore Perfecting Sunscreen did not cause any breakouts, it did cause a bit of extra oiliness in our skincare experts with oily skin types.

We love the concept of the Silken Pore Perfecting Sunscreen but it was a bit challenging to blend the product all over the face and neck.

The product texture is rather thick; but using a stippling makeup brush or moistened makeup sponge made it much easier to apply an even layer without pulling the skin.

Our experts with various skin types, from dry and sensitive to oily and acne-prone tested the Tatcha Silken Pore Perfecting Sunscreen for a few weeks and found that it caused no irritation or breakouts.

Similar to the Mineral Sheerscreen, the Silken Pore Perfecting Sunscreen caused extra oiliness in people with oily, acne-prone skin types.

Final thoughts on the Tatcha Sunscreen

However, applying oil-control powder just a few times a day did keep our skin looking smooth and matte.

But the thick texture of the Silken Pore Perfecting Sunscreen requires some work to blend, which might not be convenient for frequent makeup wearers.

At $32.50 per fluid ounce, Tatcha’s Silken Pore Perfecting Sunscreen was our priciest option among our 3 sunscreens yet surprisingly our #3 choice for best natural sunscreen of 2021. This in no way makes this a bad product.

However, in terms of our standards (ease of application being a big factor) the Silken Pore Perfecting Sunscreen was our least favorite.

This product is truly unique as a sunscreen and primer that really does help smooth large pores and rough skin texture. Makeup also applies very smoothly and looks radiant all day despite a bit of oiliness.

If you wear makeup often we highly recommend that you at least try their mini travel size version to see if it works for you.
